The KY6R “Retirement Antenna Challenge”

A Doublet up 50′, an Inverted Vee up 60′ and a 20′ Circumference Mag Loop Walk into a Bar . . .  I won’t be retiring for about 5 years – but I guess in a way I am retiring from Ham Radio as far as having a “serious” station and antennas. However, I am more or less back to where I was in…

The Elecraft KX-3 Sounds Better than the K3

To my ears, the Elecraft KX-3 sounds much better than the K3 I’ve noticed this in the past, but now that I have gone through another “cycle” of having a K3 and KX-3 in the shack, the KX-3 is way more “comfortable” to listen to than the K3. The receiver just seems quieter. Is it just me?

Goodbye K3 and UrbanBeam

The new KY6R Station The new antenna – Diamond 80/40M Inverted Vee up 60′. The KY6R Magnetic Loop to the left – waiting for me to have the time to finish that project The AB-577 stays (for now) I’d be super surprised if the KY6R Magnetic Loop performs (nearly) as good as the Inverted Vee, but that’s not saying too much. Inverted Vee’s have…

Solar Powered QRP – KX-3

KX-3 with Begali Adventurer Last Thanksgiving, on vacation, I brought the KX-3 and threw a wire I the trees. It was very casual and fun. The things I will keep are the KX-3 and my Begali keys and the AB-577 tower. I will put up an 88′ ladder line doublet, and it will be up 65′. It will be oriented NE and SW. I…

KX-3 Accessories

Begali Adventure Mono I’ll be going portable soon – and will have a portable mono key for my trip. While I swore off anything but QRP CW – with these *&$(% power outages, I guess a microphone is in order One thing for sure – I am now a 100% Solar Powered Elecraft KX-3 man. My Icom IC-7300 is still in the shack, but…

Superhet Receivers are “So 2012” . . .

If the ICOM-705 debuts with an ATU, I will most likely purchase one I have been doing A-B listening tests between my ICOM IC-7300 and Elecraft KX-3, and in every case, the 7300 is easier to listen to. As I mentioned before, the KX-3 has a much better keyer – I can barely stand the 7300 keyer. That is a moot point though, because…

How to Make Your KX-3 Sing!

I thought panadapters were a waste of time until now (click on the image) I have owned Elecraft P3 and PX3 panadapters and also have played with an SDRPlay as a panadapter, and have never used one to make a QSO – because I am so good at making split pileup QSO’s “by ear”. I am just much faster doing it the “old school”…

Greyline QRP “Boots” and the KX-3

Win4K3Suite Audio Monitor Every morning I hear plenty of DX stations in OC, Pac and Asia calling CQ. So far I’ve been batting about 88% – I can catch the DX 7 out of 8 times. Some, like VK, ZL, JA, KH. KL, VE7 and XE1 have been simple. Yesterday, YB did reply, but never got my call right. I love the fact that…

Win4K3Suite and the ASUS Xonar U7 MKII

The ASUS Xonar U7 MKII turns my laptop into the best panadapter I have ever had . . .  I stumbled on the Win4K3Suite online, and found that with an $80 dollar ASUS external soundcard, I could have the best panadapter possible with the KX-3. I happen to have an ASUSPro laptop – and its the best $500 I have ever spent on a…

The Amazing Elecraft KX-3

By accident – I will start my new DXing Challenge using the KX-3 instead of the KX-2 Elecraft released the KX-3 quite a few years ago (in technology years), but it still is very high on Sherwood’s Receiver Test list: http://www.sherweng.com/table.html If you look at all of the reviews of the rig – they are all high marks. I had one a few years…
