The Social Media Dustbin

I’m doing what I can to “take out the trash” as far as social media is concerned. Facebook and now Twitter are out of my life. I will not participate in something our Asshole in Chief abuses as he lets our government go to hell in a hand basket. I deep sixed eHam years ago. I also sold my car to protest with my…

New Car!

Just kidding. We are a one car family for several reasons, and one is a protest to leaving the Paris Accord. Actions speak louder than words!

Social Coding, Open Source and the Maker Community

Now that I am in the final phase of packaging the u.RAT, there is one thing that stands out regarding the “social” aspect of the project. I received very encouraging and warm support from Elecraft, a fellow in Honolulu, another in the UK, Adafruit and another fellow in the US. Then I looked at the latest “DX News” and it was actually depressing….

U.RAT OLED Display Works!

I now have both the KPOD and and the Adafruit Pi OLED working on the Raspberry Pi Zero W. As soon as it arrived, I soldered the header on to the Pi Zero W. I then used the Make script to build the OLED_96 library, then did the Build of WiringPi, then compiled the hacked Elecraft URAT code to use both libraries. Huge shout…

ZS1AFS Heard Well on 40M LP

I heard Tom, ZS1AFS on the morning 40M Long Path, which is the first time in what seems like a month or maybe even two. I don’t know if this is true every year, but my guess that this path isn’t that great around the Northern Hemisphere summer solstice – at least this year. But you would think that then it would also suffer…

Lughnasadh, August 1

We are a few weeks away from a Celtic calendar day called a Cross Quarter Day. It’s the half way point between a solstice and an equinox. Agriculturally, it’s the very first part of the fall harvest. As a father of two boys that went to Acalanes in the Lafayette school district, I clearly remember July 15 being halfway between end of school and…

Introducing The KY6R Maker Workbench

I’ve been so busy this week getting the u.RAT to work, and work is busy as well that I did not even have time to start playing with the Rigol DS 1024z. I at least have a square wave on it, using a procedure you use to calibrate your probes. A little tour of the Maker part of the shack. I have a list…

3Y0Z and the Last Gasp of Cycle 24

The trend sure looks good for 3Y0Z to end up with the last “uplift” of Cycle 24. In fact, conditions sunspot wise today are the best they have been in quite a while – the SSN is 58, but with some storms. Cycle 24 seems to be saying “I’m not dead yet” . . .

Happy DeNogginizer!

Drake’s Brewing in Oakland is in an old car dealership on Broadway, which was called Auto Row. They did a great job with this cool old place, and I had a Covfefe Double IPA, followed by an unfiltered IPA they call “Foraging Racoon”. Kat had the Saison, a very well done Belgian style beer, and the pizza was just phenomenal. We rode our bikes…

Summer Rides

The pedestrian / bike bridge over Treat Blvd in Pleasant Hill Kat and I rode to Danville and back from the Pleasant Hill BART station. We had a great lunch at the Danville Brewing Company brew pub. The deal I made was that I have to pedal for my beer. Fair enough! The Euryops in their full summer glory.
