Summer Rides

The pedestrian / bike bridge over Treat Blvd in Pleasant Hill Kat and I rode to Danville and back from the Pleasant Hill BART station. We had a great lunch at the Danville Brewing Company brew pub. The deal I made was that I have to pedal for my beer. Fair enough! The Euryops in their full summer glory.

Hello Stepper!

YAHOO! I am now on my way. Its so easy to wire up these components, download some code, flash the memory with the code and start the engines! The Maker Community is amazing – in fact, half of the battle is trying to decide which of many possible solutions would be best for your particular “use case”. All I can say Ham Radio Operators,…

Ubuntu Bash on Windows 10!

SSH into the Raspberry Pi from Windows 10 Ubuntu Bash On Windows 10, the “Creator” version, there is a great feature that is Beta and unchecked (not turned on) after you get the Creator upgrade. Its more than just Bash on Windows 10, its Ubunto. It comes with most of the Linux utilities, so the first thing I did was uninstall Putty. Its pretty…

Palstar BT1500A Schematic and My Switching Arrangement

I’m not exactly sure I understand how to read this schematic, but for all bands, the relay switching that I have going on is >50 ohms, LP or the UP position(Hi-Z) -which by default has the 65 pf engaged at the output – and then the Low C, where the larger 960 pf capacitor is taken out of the circuit. The resulting circuit looks…

Remote Controlled BT1500A Part 3: All Wired Up

The tuner is mounted in its waterproof gasketed box and has been tested to make sure the SPE 1.3K can work with it. The answer is Yes. I said “servo” in the video but meant stepper motor. Anyway, that’s the next big half of the project – getting the stepper motors working and installed. In the mean time – its easy enough to go…

Field Day

Wow – I’m having a big ham radio and maker weekend. This is exactly what I have needed to re jump start my hobby. I almost stopped blogging because after I “made the grade” with Honor Roll and DX-pedition of the Year goals in the bag, I really thought that I was done. A few years ago I tried to get into Arduino, but…

When Art Meets Science

Some fun with Arduino and a small servo motor – the “prelude” to the Stepper antenna tuner . . . I’m obviously having too much fun!

Summer Solstice 2017

An art piece I made years ago – but that still depicts how I feel about the (northern hemisphere) summer solstice. This week – until this coming Sunday is the “week of the longest days of the year”, and starting Sunday, we start losing daylight minutes. This is of course what low banders like – each day another day towards more darkness and longer…

KY6R Summer Project: Arduino Stepper Motor Driven Palstar BT-1500A!

K8AC’s wonderful balanced antenna tuner with stepper motors and controller K8AC Control unit http://www.k8ac.net/BalancedTuner.html One of the coolest projects you can do in ham radio is automate an “analog” or manual antenna tuner. I just bought the Palstar BT-1500A, which is a balanced tuner, and I fully expect that it will be great on 160 – 30M with the “Mod Bob” antenna that I…

Guest Blogger – Mike Coffey, KJ4Z

The absolute BEST thing about working on VK0EK was making new friends and sharing in the success of the project. Mike is a forward thinker and the master mind behind the VK0LD Remote operation, and he also worked very hard behind the scenes – on the OQRS system, networking and the satellite gear, and many other critically important behind the scenes tasks and programs…
