DXCC “Trifecta”

Happy Friday – and Cheer’s to the Weekend! I need 12 more to achieve DXCC on 160M, which is a very big deal here on the West Coast. I will also achieve 9BDXCC at the same time – so its a double good achievement and now that its within reach, I’m getting excited about DXCC as much as I can these days. I was…

Countdown to Autumnal Equinox 2017

from NJ.COM . . . At 4:02 PM EST, the sun will be directly over the equator – meaning there will be equal daylight and night time world wide. I’m up with a cup of my favorite French Roast listening to FP/G3ZAY fade, and with high hopes that the T88 fires up soon. They are both in my grey line sights. Last night, I…

The “Dirty Dozen”!

I’m now on a jag to get to 90 with only 10 left to go. T88XA was spotted this morning after my sunrise – so that’s one that should be easy. 5T5OK will require serious luck as I have not yet heard them, VK9XI starts up in less than 2 weeks, CT9 is a possibility, KG4HH another in October, VK9CI in October, A52SJ –…

The Best Two Antennas I Have Ever Had

For all low bands, 160-30M, my own designed “Modified Bobtail” is a very clear winner. I’ve blogged extensively about this antenna, and the best antenna tuner for this antenna – and my favorite antenna tuner of all time is the Palstar BT1500A. Every feature, knob and button is useful and perfect for the Mod Bob. The best yagi antenna I have ever had was…

ZS3D and ZS6CCY on Mod Bob – 40M

Dani, ZS3D and ZS6CCY were 59 on the Mod Bob tuned for 40M, so I have just confirmed that its as good or better than the broadside direction on the DX Engineering DV-40-P. I broke through small pileups and was first in in both cases. What was especially cool was that this was during a major solar storm – with a radio blackout in…

Mod-Bob vs. DX Engineering DV-40-P

My DX Engineering DV-40-P 40M phased array just gave up the ghost (SWR went high and there is no directionality), and while its most likely a gopher who has chewed on a wire, the two elements are really too close to the Mod Bob. It is possible (but much less likely) that transmitting on the Mod-Bob has fried a component in the DV-40-P.  Since…
